James and MacPherson

An ongoing collaboration between Hamish MacPherson and myself. We met in 2012 and since then have researched and
collaborated on a number of projects and performances. Out shared interest in Nordic Larp (live action role play) and
choreographic games has led us to devise works which question the use of spoken language in hosting, participating and reflecting on collective performance.

The Third Thing - a provocation

A recent provocation of mine commissioned by Tate for teachers.

'The Third Thing'
The first you are sure of; the second is right in front of you. The third needs some time to be found.
This provocation is a call to seek out third things.
Over a one-year period I’d like you to use the following steps to help you locate twelve third things.
Steps
1. Find a suitable room within the place you work, rest, play, create or live.
2. Find two suitable walls that are clear of clutter, and directly opposite each other.
3. Each month, find two images of things that are most like you.
4. There is no right or wrong choice.
5. Affix the images onto your two opposite walls, as if they are looking at each other.
6. Each month, alone or with a group of your choosing, use the two images to help find a third thing.
7. The third thing might be something arranged, spoken, eaten, shared, prepared or thought.
8. There is no right or wrong choice.
9. With each subsequent month, clear the walls and repeat the cycle.
At the end of the year, arrange a gathering of people and reflect on what you have made happen.
Ps, if for some reason an element of this provocation doesn’t make sense, change it to suit your needs.
